TL;DR

For a full-service Christmas lighting program with your preferred installation date and custom-cut product, the booking window is June through August for new accounts. Renewals open in May. New clients who reach out in October can often be accommodated, but design flexibility and scheduling options narrow significantly the later you wait.

The question comes up every year, usually from someone who has already waited a bit too long. How early is too early? Is calling in June reasonable? The short answer: June is not too early. For a full-service Christmas lighting program, it is about right.

What most homeowners do not realize going in is that a professional Christmas lighting program is not the same as calling a service that shows up with lights from a box. The product is custom-cut for your property. The installation calendar fills in sequence. The crews have a finite number of installation days before the season begins. When you contact a company matters because of those three realities, not because of any artificial deadline.

The Answer Is Earlier Than Most Homeowners Expect

The booking window for a new account at The Perfect Light opens well before the holiday season, and that is by design.

Full-service Christmas lighting programs use commercial-grade, custom-cut product. That means every strand is prepared specifically for your roofline dimensions, your trees, your columns, and your architectural features. It is not a roll of product measured at the house and clipped to fit. It is product cut and prepared to spec for your property before the crew ever arrives. That preparation happens upstream of your installation date, and it takes time.

The other reality is the installation calendar. Professional Christmas lighting companies have a defined number of crews and a defined number of installation days between late October and mid-December. That calendar fills from one end, meaning clients who book early get their preferred dates. Clients who contact a company in October are not necessarily turned away, but their scheduling flexibility is reduced to whatever remains open.

For a new account at The Perfect Light, the ideal window is June through August. That is when the design consultation happens, the product gets specified, and the installation date is secured.

How the Renewal Window Works

Existing clients at The Perfect Light follow a slightly different timeline. The renewal window opens in May, which means returning accounts have access to the scheduling calendar before new clients do.

Renewal means the same design returns to the same property, with any updates the client wants to make. If you want to expand the scope, add a section of garland, change the color palette, or adjust the roofline coverage, the spring renewal conversation is the right time for that. If you want the same installation as last year, the renewal itself takes a few minutes.

The product is stored at our facility through the off-season. When fall arrives, it is inspected before it goes back on the house. Anything that has failed over the winter is replaced before installation. The returning client does not manage inventory, does not retrieve boxes from a garage, and does not discover in November that stored product has stopped working. The renewal picks up where the previous season ended.

For existing clients, reaching out in May or June keeps every option open. The later the renewal happens in the summer, the narrower the preferred-date window gets, even for returning accounts.

What New Clients Can Expect at Different Points in the Season

Timing matters differently depending on where you are in the calendar year.

May through July is the best window for a new account. The full design calendar is available, custom product can be prepared without time pressure, and preferred installation dates are open. The design consultation is unhurried, and the homeowner has time to think through what they want before committing.

August and September still works well for new accounts. There is less scheduling flexibility than June or July, but a full design consultation is still possible and most installation windows are still available. Product can be prepared on a normal timeline.

October is when the conversation changes. New accounts can often still be accommodated in October, but the scheduling picture is more constrained. Early October tends to have more flexibility than late October, and design options may narrow depending on what can realistically be prepared before the installation window closes. If a homeowner contacts us in October and the job can be done properly, we do it. If the timeline does not allow for the right product and a proper installation, we say so.

November and beyond is typically too late for a new full-service program in a given season. At that point, the crews are in active installation season and custom product preparation is not feasible on the required timeline.

The honest guidance: if you are thinking about a program for this season, the time to reach out is now. Not because of an artificial deadline, but because every week that passes narrows the scheduling options available to you.

What to Have Ready Before Your Design Consultation

The design consultation is typically 30 to 45 minutes and happens at the property. You do not need a detailed wish list beforehand. The conversation covers what areas you want lit, what style fits the house and the neighborhood, and what the program costs. Everything is confirmed before anything moves forward.

A few things that make the consultation go smoothly:

  • The primary decision-maker should be present if possible. Design and scope decisions go better with the right person in the conversation from the start.
  • If you have seen Christmas lighting you like on a neighbor’s house, at a hotel, or anywhere else, a photo on your phone is a useful starting point.
  • If you have a specific event or date you want the lights up for, know that date before the consultation. It is the first scheduling anchor the conversation works backward from.
  • If there are areas you specifically do not want lit, or features you want included, mention them at the start.

That is genuinely everything you need. The rest of the decisions happen during the consultation itself.

What Happens After You Book

Once the program is confirmed, the sequence is straightforward. Custom product is prepared for your property. Your installation date is on the schedule. When the crew arrives, they bring product already prepared and labeled for your house. You do not need to be home, though many clients are.

The installation for a typical residential program takes three to six hours. When the crew leaves, the lights are on and the timer is set. That is all the homeowner does on installation day.

From that point, the program covers the season. If something needs attention mid-season, you call and the crew comes back. Mid-season service calls are included in the program price. There is no trip charge and no separate invoice for a service visit.

In January, we coordinate a takedown date and the crew returns to remove everything. The product goes back to our facility, where it is stored through the fall. When the next renewal conversation opens in May, the process starts again.

The earlier you have that first conversation, the easier every step after it is.

Frequently asked questions

When is it too late to book a Christmas lighting program?

For a new full-service program, late October is typically the outer edge of the practical booking window. Custom product preparation and installation scheduling become difficult to manage properly after that point. The ideal window for a new account is June through August. Existing clients renew in May through July.

What is the difference between a renewal and a new account?

Existing clients at The Perfect Light renew their programs each spring, typically in the May through July window. Renewal means the same design returns to the same property, with any updates the client wants. New accounts go through an initial design consultation and product preparation before the first installation. Renewals have priority access to the scheduling calendar because the design and product work was done in a prior season.

How long does the design consultation take?

The design consultation typically runs 30 to 45 minutes and happens at the property. By the end, the scope, design, and pricing are confirmed. Nothing is ambiguous before moving forward.

Do I need to be home for the design consultation?

Yes. The consultation is a walkthrough of the property with one of our team members. The primary decision-maker should be present, since design and budget decisions happen during that conversation.

Do I need to be home for the installation?

No. Many clients are home and enjoy watching the installation, but it is not required. The crew arrives with custom product already prepared for your property. Everything is verified and working before the crew leaves.

Can I change my design from year to year?

Yes. The spring renewal conversation is the right time to expand the scope, change the color palette, add sections, or adjust anything about the existing design. Most clients settle into a design and keep it. Others update it a bit each season. Both work within the program structure.
